Family Worship

God Can Always Be Trusted:

Put together care packages to be given away at a local shelter. Include items like socks, toothbrush, hand warmers, and granola bars. Write a note for each package to provide encouragement and hope for the recipient. Talk with kids about how God promised to be a comfort to His people and how His people can be a comfort to others.

MEMORY VERSE:

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,

whose confidence is in him.”

Jeremiah 17:7

Learn the Memory Verse together and say it throughout the week to help your family remember and apply what they have learned.

STEP 1. GATHER!

Use this time to begin Family Worship Night and have fun!

For Fun

Plan a trip to a flea market or secondhand store. Work as a family to select an item that you think you can “flip” into something new and better. It could be a new coat of paint on a lamp or a complete repurpose of an old coffee table. Over the next few weeks, work on the renovation project and discuss how Jesus gives the ultimate restoration and renovation by giving us new hearts when we believe in Him!

STEP 2. WORSHIP!

  • Sing and have fun while worshiping then pray. Take a moment here to thank God for your family and your time together!!

Elementary:

STEP 4. DISCUSSION!

Use these questions and points to have a conversation with your children about the Bible story.

Preschool Discussion:

  • Jeremiah told the people of Judah messages from who? God!
  • What did Jeremiah warn the people about? Jeremiah warned the people that God was going to punish them for their wrong choices. But God loved His people and had a good plan for them.
  • God said, “One day, I will bring My people back to their land. I will be their God. They will be My people.”
  • While the people were in Babylon, they were sad. God said, “You will make music again. You will dance with joy! I will turn your sadness into happiness. You will have everything you need because I am good. There is hope!” Tell me one way God is good in your life.
  • God had a plan to help His people want to obey Him. God would make a new promise—a better covenant—so people could be saved from their sins and obey His commands. God said, “I will forgive their wrong choices.”

Christ Connection: God’s words are always true, so we can always trust God. Jeremiah told of God’s plan to forgive sin and help people want to obey God. Jesus made these words come true. God forgives our sin through His Son, Jesus.

Elementary Discussion:

  • Have you ever seen one of those TV shows where people buy an old, run-down house and make it look totally new again? It’s always fascinating to see how they can take something that everyone believed was ruined and make it into something beautiful and special. But that is nothing compared to the work God does to bring dead hearts to life!
  • The prophet Jeremiah warned the people of Judah about the consequences that would come because they were disobedient and had broken the covenant with God. But along with those words of bad news, Jeremiah also shared a message of good news. He told the people about a day when God would forgive sin and change people’s hearts. He said that God would turn their mourning into joy and bring happiness out of their grief. Jesus made these words come true!
  • God forgives our sin through His Son, Jesus. He changes us and gives us power through His Spirit to obey His commands. Jesus did not come to get rid of the law; through His sinless life, Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the old covenant. When we trust in Jesus, we are credited with His righteousness and our changed hearts enable us to want to follow in Christ’s footsteps and obey God as well.

Christ Connection: God’s words brought hope to God’s people because His words were true. God can always be trusted. Jeremiah told about a day when God would forgive sin and change people’s hearts. Jesus’ death and resurrection provides forgiveness of sins. Through Jesus, we have new hearts and life with God forever.

Mission Moment

  • Recall that Hudson Taylor knew from a young age that he wanted to help Chinese people know about Jesus. He had a special understanding that he needed to live like the Chinese people so they would believe what he told them about Jesus.
  • SAY “Hudson was very enthusiastic about telling people about Jesus. The organization that he founded is still in operation to support missionaries in China. The organization brought missionaries to China while Hudson was there. His organization trained Chinese workers, raised money, and developed a Chinese church with many people.”

STEP 5. Pray!

  • Pray: Jesus, You gave Your life on the cross so that all who trust in You could have new life. You are the fulfillment of the promise spoken through Jeremiah. You are the One who turns mourning to joy and brings happiness to our grief. Help us to know You and trust in You as our King! Amen.
