Family Worship

Jesus Teaches About Behavior :

The focus of this family time is to use five easy steps to teach your family Jesus taught people what it means to follow Him. He taught how people should interact with God and others. Believers live to honor God—not to earn God’s favor but because they already have it.

MEMORY VERSE:

“Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power

and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,

for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

Yours, LORD, is the kingdom;

you are exalted as head over all.”

1 Chronicles 29:11

Learn the Memory Verse together and say it throughout the week to help your family remember and apply what they have learned.

STEP 1. GATHER!

Use this time to begin Family Worship Night and have fun!

For Fun

Visit an ethnic restaurant in your city to observe their foods and customs. If the owners or employees represent the culture of the restaurant, ask them to share more about their culture and customs that might be unique. Ask to pray for them and for their family and be sure to thank them for sharing their culture with your family.

To Serve

Take time each day this week to pray for missionaries who are serving in other countries. Ask God to bless their work and for the good news of Jesus to spread in the culture where the missionaries serve. Remind kids that God’s kingdom is not limited to one culture or one race. Heaven will be filled with believers from every nation, tribe, and tongue—united in their love and worship of Jesus Christ!

STEP 2. WORSHIP!

  • Sing and have fun while worshiping then pray. Take a moment here to thank God for your family and your time together!!

STEP 3. BIBLE!

Watch the Bible story video or read Matthew 6:1-18

from the Bible or Watch

Elementary:

Use these questions and points to have a conversation with your children about the Bible story.

Preschool Discussion:

  • Where was Jesus in today’s Bible story? (up on a mountain)
  • The crowds were listening to His teachings. Jesus taught people about giving.
  • Should people give in secret so God gets the attention or should they make sure everyone knows how much they give? (give in secret) Yes, they should give in secret, so God gets the attention.
  • Jesus taught about praying and forgiving others.
  • Next, He taught the people not to collect treasure on earth, but in heaven where it can last forever.
  • Jesus reminded the people that God takes care of the birds and the flowers, where can we find birds and flowers? If God takes care of plants and animals, how much more will He provide and take care of us!
  • Jesus’ teachings showed the people that He is different. He is in charge and knows what He is talking about!

Elementary Discussion:

  • • A custom is a practice or behavior that is unique to a particular group. Different countries and cultures around the world have different customs. For instance, in some countries, the custom of burping after a meal can actually be a compliment to the chef! (Though we don’t recommend trying this at home.)
  • Jesus taught that every believer is part of a better, truer Kingdom: God’s kingdom. As citizens of God’s kingdom, He has called us to live in a different way. The behaviors we practice should reflect of our residency in His kingdom—and that often means they are very different from the world around us.
  • How do we live out these behaviors? Second Peter 1:3 tells us that God has “given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” Jesus showed us what it looks like to fully obey God, and God has given every believer His Spirit as a helper to make them more and more like Jesus. The more we know Jesus and what He has done for us, the more we want to imitate His ways and the more we depend on the Spirit to transform us. Our prayer should be that God would change our words, thoughts, and actions to look more like Jesus so that the world can see Him more clearly.
  • Jesus taught people what it means to follow Him. He taught how people should interact with God and others. Believers live to honor God—not to earn God’s favor but because they already have it.

Mission Moment

Tell your family that over half of the people living in Cincinnati do not regularly go to any church.

SAY Amer and Victoria Safadi are missionaries in Cincinnati partnering with Lakota Hills Baptist Church to tell the Arabic-speaking people in the area about Jesus. The church has helped the missionaries by allowing the Arabic-language church to use their buildings, offered food for ministries, and showed love to the missionary family and the new church. The church also offers English classes to help people who want to learn English. The English classes give the missionaries and church members opportunities to tell the people about Jesus.

Pray that the Safadis continue to meet and get to know the Arabic-speaking people in Cincinnati. Pray that their church will continue to grow to tell more people in their community about Jesus.

    STEP 5. Pray!

  • Pray: God, help us to grow in our love for Jesus so that our words, thoughts, and actions would become more and more like Him. Help us to remember that we don’t obey to earn your love, but we want to obey because you have freely loved us through Jesus! Amen.
